In his popular book, Super Crunchers: Why Thinking-by-Numbers Is the New Way to Be Smart (2007), Ian Ayres describes how computers are being used to make judgments and predictions in business, government, sports, and other areas, including medical and mental health practice. Ayres concluded, We are in a historic moment of horse-versus-locomotive competition, where intuitive and experiential expertise is losing out time and time again to number crunching (p. 10). The use of computers in the area of psychology will be described in this entry.
