The therapeutic alliance is one of the best-researched variables in the psychotherapy literature. Several meta-analytic reviews have provided evidence linking the quality of the alliance to treatment outcome. Most recently, Horvath and Bedi (2002), in a review of 89 studies, found a median effect size of .25 Although as Horvath and Bedi point out, the magnitude of this relation may not appear very impressive, the impact of the alliance across studies is far in excess of the outcome variance that can be accounted for by techniques.
