Video is used in psychology to help people change (behavior, feelings, attitudes), to gather and disperse information, and as experimental stimuli. These uses are summarized in this entry. In the 1970s, video recorders became available to therapists and trainers, who rushed to use them so their clients and trainees could see themselves as others see them. In the 1980s, the most prevalent use of video in the behavioral sciences was for data gathering. In the last decade or so, technology has made video editing easy—hence a gathering interest in creating video images, not just documenting events for scrutiny.
