Abstract

In 1896, Lightner Witmer established the first psychological clinic at the University of Pennsylvania. This event is universally recognized as marking the beginning of the science and profession of clinical psychology—although not yet by that name. In 1907, Witmer founded the journal The Psychological Clinic, and in the first issue he called for the establishment of a new helping profession, to be called clinical psychology.
