Abstract

An American psychologist, Robert Sessions Woodworth received his AB from Amherst College and his MA from Harvard University, where he studied under William James. He received his PhD from Columbia University in 1899. Most of his academic career was spent at Columbia. He was well known for his introductory text Psychology, first published in 1921, which went through five editions. His Experimental Psychology, first published in 1939, was a major handbook of research in that area. This handbook was later revised in collaboration with Harold Schlosberg in 1954. Woodworth presented a systematic position in psychology in his book Dynamic Psychology, published in 1918 and later revised as the Dynamics of Behavior in 1958.
