Face recognition is an interdisciplinary field that integrates techniques from image processing, pattern recognition, computer vision, computer graphics, psychology, and evaluation approaches. Automatic extraction of human head, face boundaries, and facial features plays an important role in the areas of access control, criminal identification, security and surveillance systems, human computer interfacing, and model-based video coding. This chapter introduces the application of image processing and pattern recognition on face images. It presents the face and facial feature extraction using support vector machine (SVM). The chapter describes the extraction of head and face boundaries and facial features. It also presents the recognition of facial action units and facial expression recognition.
