Summary

Feature extraction (or detection) aims to locate significant feature regions on images depending on their intrinsic characteristics and applications. These regions can be defined in global or local neighborhood and distinguished by shapes, textures, sizes, intensities, statistical properties, and so on. This chapter presents selected often-used feature extraction topics. It is organized as follows: First, Fourier descriptor (FD) and moment invariants are introduced. The chapter describes the Shape number and hierarchical features followed by Corner detection. It presents Hough transform and describes principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminate analysis (LDA). Finally the chapter discusses feature reduction in input and feature spaces.
