The pattern recognition process can be viewed as a twofold task, namely, developing decision rules based on human knowledge (learning) and using them for decision making regarding an unknown pattern (classification). This chapter presents an overview of selected often-used pattern recognition topics in image processing and analysis. It is organized as follows. First, the chapter introduces the unsupervised clustering algorithm, and presents the Bayes classifier followed by a description of the support vector machine. Then, it describes the neural network classifier followed by a discussion on the adaptive resonance theory network. Finally, chapter discusses the fuzzy sets in image analysis.
