Abstract

α,β-unsaturated aldehydes are synthesized from the reaction of ethoxyethynemagnesium bromide and ketone or aldehyde. This reaction is referred to as the Arens and van Dorp reaction. Various modifications have been studied in this reaction and lithium ethoxyacetylene is generated by treatment of β-chlorovinyl ether with lithium amide, which then reacts with a ketone or aldehyde to form α,β-unsaturated aldehyde. The new protocol of this reaction is known as the Isler modification.
