Abstract

The transformation of α-haloketone into ester along with the migration of one of the alkyl (or aryl) moieties in this ketone to the α-position of another moiety when the α-haloketone is treated with alkali alkoxide (e.g., NaOEt, NaOMe) is generally known as Aston–Greenburg rearrangement. This transformation is extensively reviewed and is found to be very useful in preparing the esters of tertiary α-carbon.
