Abstract

Transformation of γ-pyrones or other pyrone derivatives into pyridines via pyronium salt intermediates, which subsequently react with an ammonium salt such as ammonium carbonate, is generally known as Baeyer pyridine synthesis. This reaction has general application in the formation of pyridines and also applied to the preparation of other types of heterocycles containing nitrogen. Several other methods for the synthesis to pyridines have been reviewed by Bergstrom. This study also explores the other methods, which generally give low yields of pyridine derivatives.
