Abstract

Manganese dioxide has been used for the oxidation of allyl alcohol to allyl aldehyde or ketones. Different types of manganese dioxide have been used for this type of oxidation. Vitamin A alcohol is oxidized to vitaminA aldehyde using manganese dioxide suspended in petroleum ether. Manganese dioxide prepared by heating the corresponding carbonate or oxalate in air has been used to oxidize benzyl alcohols dissolved in petroleum ether to aldehyde . Acid-washed manganese dioxide suspended in petroleum ether has been reported to oxidize allylic alcohols to corresponding aldehydes. Various other oxidations of alcohol using manganese dioxide have been reported, including the oxidation of unsaturated steroidal alcohol, polyene alcohol, acetylenic alcohol, ferrocene alcohol, and benzyl alcohols. This reaction has wide application in organic synthesis.
