Abstract

In this reaction, higher-order aliphatic acids (particularly in steroid side chains and side chains of other cyclic compounds) have been reported to degrade to the next lower homologs via the four steps of consecutive processes. This method has been an important method for the elucidation of aliphatic acid structures except for cyclopropyl acetic acid and lactone. Presently this method has been modified by using different oxidation reagents. This reaction has been extensively applied to structural elucidations and also for the organic synthesis.
