Abstract

The conjugate addition between hydroazobenzene and dimethyl acetylene-dicarboxylate is known as Diels – Reese reaction. The resulting adduct has been found to get transformed into three different heterocyclic compounds under various experimental conditions. The refluxing of the adduct in α-picoline produces high yield. This reaction has application in the preparation of pyrazolones, indoles, and quinolines.
