The photochemical reduction of mercuric chloride to calomel by oxalates is generally referred to as the Eder reaction. This reaction has been reported to be a chain reaction of great energy efficiency and is often used in actinometry. Various inhibitors, photochemical sensitizers, and inducers have been screened out for the optimum yield of the reaction.
Keywords: mercuric chloride; oxalates; potassium trioxalatocobaltiate; actinometry
