Abstract

The synthesis of oxazole derivatives by treatment of equimolar amounts of aldehyde cyanohydrin and aromatic aldehyde in anhydrous ether with dry hydrochloride is known as the Fischer oxazole synthesis or Fischer synthesis. This method is found suitable for the preparation of 2,5-diaryloxazoles. Some minor byproducts have also been reported to form in this reaction. The modifications of this reaction include the reaction between aroyl cyanide and aromatic aldehyde in the presence of HCl gas and the reaction of nitrile with aromatic aldehyde, HCl and SOCl2.
