Abstract

The 1,1-dimethylethyl 4-formyl-2,2-dimethyloxazolidine-3-carboxylate or N-Boc D-serinal acetonide is known as the Garner aldehyde. This compound has wide application in organic synthesis due to its chemical and optical stability. This aldehyde can be readily prepared in the laboratory without partial racemization. To enhance the stability under acidic conditions, the Garner aldehyde is protected by Cbz instead of Boc. Various applications of this compound have been discussed.
