The synthesis of diaryls (mostly unsymmetrical diaryls) by condensation of aryl diazonium salts with aromatic or heterocyclic compounds in the presence of aqueous NaOH is referred to as the Gomberg–Bachmann alkaline reaction. It is known that this reaction is rapid and easy to carry out, especially for the aromatic diazonium salts containing an electron-withdrawing group. This reaction has been modified using aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborate under phase transfer conditions. This reaction has applications in the coupling of aryl compounds or aryl and heteroaromatics.
