Abstract

The synthesis of 4-hydroxyquinolines from anilines and diethyl ethoxymethylenemalonate involving the condensation to anilinomethylenemalonate, cyclo-acylation to quinolin-4-one nucleus, and subsequent hydrolysis and decarboxylation is generally referred to as the Gould–Jacobs reaction. This reaction works well for anilines with electron-donating groups at the meta-position. This reaction is very useful for preparing 4-hydroxyquinoline derivatives.
