Abstract

The thermal transformation of an anthranilic acid into 4-keto-3,4-dihydroquinazoline by the condensation with an amide is generally referred to as the Niementowski reaction. The formation of 4-keto-3,4-dihydroquinazoline is also known as benzoylene urea, which is involved in various chemical reactions. The study finds that a high yield is expected when a formamide or acetamide reacts with an anthranilic acid, whereas the yield decreases when a higher order of amide is used in this reaction. This reaction has been found to be useful for the preparation of quinazoline derivatives.
