Abstract

The manufacturing of 1,3-butadiene from ethanol, involving the dehydrogenation of ethanol to acetaldehyde and the deoxygenation of crotonaldehyde is generally referred to as the Ostromislensky process or Ostromislensky reaction. This reaction is two-steps process, where the conversion of acetaldehyde into crotonaldehyde is the most crucial step. This process is useful for the large-scale production of 1,3-butadiene for rubber. Several catalysts have been used to facilitate this reaction for example, tanta catalyst (Ta2O5), Zirconia, etc.
