The double Diels–Alder reaction between maleic anhydride and 1,1-diarylethylenes followed by rearomatization to form higher aromatic analogs is generally known as the Wagner–Jauregg reaction. Likewise, the corresponding products are known as the Wagner–Jauregg adducts. In contrast, the occurrence of this reaction strongly depends on the steric effect. This reaction has certain application in the preparation of polyaromatic compounds.
