Abstract

This chapter focuses on the emerging field of supramolecular chemistry concerning ion-pair recognition. The recent progress in the design of receptors that simultaneously bind both cationic and anionic guests is reported here. The different synthetic strategies adopted to accommodate ion pairs within receptors are discussed, and the advantages in terms of affinity and selectivity that can be obtained by this approach are compared with those of simple ion receptors.
