Abstract

English Baptist pastor, orientalist, and proclaimed “Father of Modern Missions,” William Carey was born on August 17, 1761, in Paulerspury, Northamptonshire, England. He was apprenticed to a shoemaker in nearby Piddington and, influenced by a fellow apprentice, began to attend a Dissenter prayer-meeting. In 1783, his readings of the Bible persuaded him of Baptist principles, and Carey was baptized in North-ampton by John Ryland Jr.
