Irenaeus' name is derived from the Greek work irene (peace). Even though he is known as one of the more important church fathers, relatively little is known regarding his life. Some historians believe he was born in Proconsular Asia, a Roman province in the western part of Asia Minor, where the seven churches mentioned in the book of Revelation were located. The exact year of his birth is not known. Some sources list his birth between AD 115 and 125, and some think he was born between AD 130 and 142. The exact year of his death is also not known, although some sources indicate he died in 202.
