Little is known of the early life of John Laski (or John à Lasco). His uncle, a prominent church leader, took an interest in him and enrolled him and his brother Jerome at the University of Bologna to study law (1514–1517). In 1517, after leaving Bologna, Laski was made canon of the collegiate church at Leczyca, coadjutor to the Dean of Gniezno, canon of Cracow and of Plock, and was ordained priest in 1521, at which time he was also promoted to Dean of Gniezno.
