David Livingstone, a Scottish medical doctor, missionary, and explorer, was already an international celebrity when New York Herald reporter and adventurer Henry Morton Stanley (1841–1904) searched for him in the jungles of Africa. When he found Livingstone, Stanley purportedly quipped, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” — a phrase that has perhaps become more famous than the man himself.
