Mechthild of Magdeburg is the author of The Flowing Light of the Godhead, the first collection of visionary writings to be composed in the German vernacular. Comprised of seven sections written over the course of approximately three decades, The Flowing Light was probably composed in Low German. A complete version survives in a 14th century Middle High German manuscript.
