Born in Sturton-le-Steeple, Nottinghamshire, John Smyth received his Bachelor and Master degrees from Christ's College, Cambridge and served as a fellow at the college from 1594 to 1598. An ordained Anglican minister, Smyth held Puritan views and was elected city lecturer of Lincoln in 1600. In 1607 he and others formed a covenanted congregation in Gainsborough.
