Abstract

Egyptian hermit and monastic, popularly (and incorrectly) regarded as the founder of Egyptian monasticism. His biography was written by St. Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria, and was extraordinarily popular in its day and afterwards. As a result, Anthony became one of the most influential figures in the development of Christian monasticism.
