St. Sergius of Radonezh (1314–1392), sometimes called “the Abbot of Russia,” played a key role in three important aspects of the founding of Russian civilization: its unification under the leadership of Moscow, its liberation from Mongol domination, and most importantly, the rebirth of the monasticism that was to have such a profound effect upon Russian thought and culture.
