William Ashley Sunday, the well-known traveling evangelist, was born on November 19, 1862, in a log house just south of Ames, Iowa. His father never saw him, for before his son's birth he had joined the Union Army and never came home, having died of an infection. Initially, “Billy,” as he was known, and his two brothers attended a one-room school near their home, but given the family's poverty, he and his two brothers were soon taken to an orphanage, where he received a relatively good education.
