A Dutch medical doctor and early missionary of the London Missionary Society (LMS) from 1799 in the Cape Colony, South Africa. One of the first LMS missionaries sent to the Cape and the first to work among the Xhosa. He gained a lasting reputation as a defender of the indigenous inhabitants, the Khoi-San (known until recently as Hottentots) and as an opponent of slavery.
