Abstract

Roger Williams is best known as the founder of Rhode Island colony and an early champion of religious liberty in the American colonies. His date of birth is uncertain, but he was born in London during the early years of King James' reign. Williams received his B.A. from Pembroke College (Cambridge University) in 1627. In 1629 he was ordained into the Church of England, and shortly thereafter joined the Puritan party.
