The Rite of Spring1 had reportedly been the most notorious premiere in the history of music and ballet. What happened at that premiere in the Théâtre des Champs Élysées in Paris was quite simply a riot. Almost from the very first notes of Igor Stravinsky's music and the very first steps of Serge Diaghilev's ballet, the audience was shocked by the scenic and rhythmic evocation of pagan rituals with percussive intensities never before heard in classical music.2
