Summary

In this chapter, an introduction to the analysis of gene expression data for biomarker discovery research is presented. Fundamental bioinformatic and analytical steps required in the implementation of biomarker discovery studies are discussed. Several examples of techniques, applications and advances in bioinformatics are provided. This chapter also offers different examples of the roles of advanced data mining and machine learning techniques in biomarker discovery research based on gene expression data. Key limitations, common pitfalls and challenges in bioinformatics for gene expression-driven biomarker discovery are discussed
