Summary

This chapter deals with some of the issues faced by graphic arts professionals when creating and processing portable document format (PDF) documents. A subset of PDF (PDF/X) has been defined as a series of ISO standards. One goal when preparing documents is to create a document that can be reproduced with a similar look on a range of devices. One way to think about documents is to consider the set of operations that will be performed on a document in its lifetime. For the purposes of this discussion the chapter considers the following subset of operations: creation, proofing, printing, and re-targeting. The chapter reviews the requirements to be able to proof, print, and re-target PDF documents. It finally looks at different types of PDF content in order to understand what additional data is needed.
