Summary

This chapter summarizes the issues that users should consider when making color measurements for the purpose of constructing International Color Consortium (ICC) profiles, and describes the recommended practices. The ISO 13655 standard specifies how color measurements and calculations for use in graphic technology are to be conducted. ISO 13655:2010 defines multiple measurement conditions for different applications. The chapter then explains how the measurement conditions defined in ISO 13655:2010 should be applied for profile making purposes. ISO 13655:2010 allows both white and black backings when making color measurements for graphic arts. The use of polarization filters largely eliminates the measurement differences that can arise between samples, which can be beneficial in process control. Two significant issues must be addressed when making measurements for the construction of profiles: device consistency and uniformity; and errors during measurement.
