  • color management;
  • colorimetric measurements;
  • commercial printing papers;
  • fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs)

Most commercial printing papers on the market have significant amounts of fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) to maximize their whiteness and brightness. FWAs contain stillbene molecules that are excited by photons in a spectral band that lies mainly in UV, and in response emit photons in a band which lies mainly within the visible spectrum. Colorimetric measurements of color prints are derived from measurements of the reflectance factor, which is the ratio of the reflected radiance to the radiance reflected under the same conditions by a perfect reflecting diffuser. A complete measurement of the fluorescent component of reflection can be achieved by a bispectral instrument.
