Summary

Military satellites have been launched in large numbers by many developed countries of the world. In this chapter deliberation will be given to various facets of military satellites related to their development and application potential. It begins with an overview of military satellites, followed by a description of various types of military satellites such as Reconnaissance satellites, SIGINT satellites and early warning satellites. The chapter discusses the different applications of military satellites. Satellite communication has been a vital part of the military systems of the USA and Russia. These satellites provide reliable, continuous, interoperable, mobile, secure and robust communication services between the various military units and between these units and the command centres. The chapter describes the military satellites developed by various nations. It covers some of the advanced concepts, these invclude new surveillance concepts using satellites, long reach non-lethal laser dazzler and long reach laser target designator.
