The chapter describes the effect of several different toxic compounds on different targets in the nervous system. Special emphasis is put on the mechanism of excitotoxicity and the effect of oxidative stress on the brain. Several examples are given of compounds which seem to act on specific regions of the brain. The effects of environmental toxic compounds, such as polychlorinated biphenyls, flame retardants and methylmercury on brain function are discussed. Examples are given of compounds causing degeneration of axons and myelinopathy.
