Abstract

Biomarkers play a critical role in the delivery of healthcare and drug development. They provide surrogate markers for disease, drug toxicity, drug response and outcome. Although numerous biomarkers are in use, the development of biomarkers that address the full complexity of the biological system can aid in refining treatment to maximize therapeutic response while minimizing adverse events. One goal of systems biology is the development of methods to identify biomarkers that can aid in understanding the complex response of the system to therapy in order to develop strategies to treat individuals based on their unique biological background.
