Abstract

The basic ideas involved in the application of model Hamiltonians involving angular momentum operators to predict energy levels and transition intensities of various molecular systems are introduced. Such methods are essential for understanding many molecular systems, and are illustrated here with a few selected examples. These include two interacting nuclear spins, “forbidden” singlet–triplet transitions and the energy-level patterns associated with Hund's cases (a)–(c) in a diatomic molecule.
