Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the social science literature on religious and spiritual development and discusses current ways of defining and explaining R-S development, ways of relating R-S development to identity and moral development, and ways of understanding problematic R-S development. The chapter contrasts belief-institution with faith-tradition approaches to studying R-S development and demonstrates how the latter aligns better with current developmental systems thinking and with current work in the related fields of comparative religious studies, history of religions, and theology.
