Fluoride-type oxide ion conductors are reviewed in terms of electrical conductivity and oxide ion transport number as the electrolyte in low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. In particular, zirconia-based systems and ceria-based systems are introduced. Electrode materials with high oxygen reduction catalytic activity at low temperatures are introduced, and also anode materials for the reduction of hydrocarbons at low temperatures are discussed.
