Summary

Despite being socially and economically entrenched in human society, alcohol is a commodity whose use is associated with a wide range of health, psychological and social harms. This chapter describes patterns and trends in alcohol use, risky drinking patterns, alcohol-related mortality and morbidity and alcohol use disorders. It includes proposed mechanisms for alcohol-related harm and provides current evidence linking specific aspects of consumption, for example volume and frequency of at-risk drinking, with unintentional and intentional injuries, chronic diseases and alcohol abuse and dependence. It also presents current estimates of comorbidity between alcohol use disorders and other psychiatric disorders, and it discusses how these may inform future research into the aetiology of alcohol use disorders.
