Summary

An overview of the text is presented. The role of literature in society is examined from the perspective of Joseph Brodsky, Poet Laureate of the Library of Congress, who was exiled from the Soviet Union for “social parasitism” and writing “decadent poetry.” Current trends in American reading habits are discussed in the context of a society that is increasingly diverse in terms of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and preparedness for learning. The concept of an integrated approach to assessment is proposed; each chapter is summarized. The chapter concludes with a survey of knowledge relating to assessment and reading.
