Summary

Research related to the underlying processes contributing to reading decoding and comprehension is presented as a precursor to best practices in assessment. The definition of dyslexia as provided by the International Dyslexia Association is explained. The difficulties inherent in phonological processing are discussed in terms of the speech chain and the sound system of the English language. The development of phonological awareness is reviewed with respect to Yopp's research from 1988. Issues and best practices related to the assessment of phonological awareness, phonological memory, rapid naming, and orthographic processing are discussed culminating in recommendations for instruction. A case study is included.
