Summary

A tongue in cheek discussion of the virtues of illiteracy as proposed by G. Stanley Hall in 1907 is presented as a prelude to a more serious explanation of the economics of reading and education. Implications for personal enrichment are discussed with reference to Maryanne Wolf's commentary on what society gains with a literate population.
