Summary

An explanation of criterion-referenced and norm-referenced tests precedes a discussion of criteria for mastery and the role of automaticity in learning. Issues related to test development are explored, together with a discussion of terminology related to basic concepts in assessment. Scoring systems and labeling systems used by test publishers are reviewed with an examination of the use of age and grade equivalents and methods for measuring progress. Factors related to test design, including reliability and validity, are reviewed with the goal of supporting educators to make good decisions regarding test selection.
